Disney Cakes and Sweets Issue 33 Lunchbox / Bento Guide

Issue 33 came with a Bambi silicone mould.

Disney Cakes and Sweets Issue 33

How to use in lunch boxes / bento

The mould is a large jelly mould so unless you have a very large bento /lunch box you might struggle to incorporate this into a lunch meal. If you do have a large bento you could use it to shape mashed potato, rice or quinoa.

What recipes are included:
• Winnie the Pooh cake part 3
• Charlotte La bBouff’s cherry charlotte
• Mickey’s caramel trail mix
• Queen of Heart’s plying card cake
• Dug’s apricot and almond flapjacks
• Fairy Fawn’s forest fancies
• Bambi’s best ever blancmange
• Making a lattice tart crust
•Pancakes

If you saw the post about issue 31 you’d know that for some reason they have swapped out very useful, versatile silicone moulds for some horribly cheap, plastic moulds. From the sneak peak it looks like that is how all moulds will be from now on. Sadly it seems it is  way for them to cut costs.

Last easter bento!!

Sadly I didn’t get as many easter bento made as I would’ve liked but that’s just how things go when you’re busy right?

But I did manage to squeeze out one last easter bento!!

easter bento 6

Ok so it didn’t look anything like I had planned….but then again I didn’t really plan. I just sort of had an idea and ran with it!

Packed in my is :

  • Mushroom rice
  • Red pepper and radish flowers
  • Quinoa “easter eggs”
  • Broccoli “bush”
  • Egg “chick” with bunny ears and
  • Bunny Pop tarts

If I could do it again I would change the “Chick-pretending-to-be-a-bunny” so he actually looked like a chick!

But hey you can’t get it right every time right?

On a more personal and serious note, I will be living on my own for the first time in my life. It’s a scary prospect and unfortunately I will have to start from scratch in regards to furniture etc so I have set up a GoFundMe page in hopes of raising some money so I can buy some furniture. I would appreciate any donations and if you are unable to donate I would greatly appreciate if you could share the link in hopes of spreading the message.

Disney Cakes and Sweets Issue 32 Lunchbox / Bento Guide

Issue 32 came with two cookie cutters, Donald Duck and Daisy.

Disney Cakes and Sweets Issue 32

How to use in lunch boxes / bento

The cutters seem to be getting a lot more detailed which is either a very good thing or a bad thing in terms of bento making! While detailed cutters can make great character sandwiches etc they also make it harder to get consistent results as the details can tear the bread.

But that doesn’t mean they can’t be used, why not make some character sandwiches or use on sliced meat, cheese or egg sheet?

Here are some mini character sandwiches I made:Donald and Daisy Sandwiches

The details aren’t that clear because I didn’t want to press too hard in case the details cut through the bread and the bread would get stuck in the tiny spaces.

What recipes are included:
• Donald and Daisy’s cute cookies
• Shenzi, Banzai and Ed’s cupcakes
• Princess Jasmine’s almond delights
• Remy’s chef hat cupcakes
• Elastigirl’s red velvet cake
• The Prince’s love-heart biscuits
• Winnie the Pooh cake part 2
• Creating wood eff
• Filo pastry recipes

I would be extremely cautious when it comes to ordering from the Eaglemoss website and where possible I would only buy these magazines in store (as I have been doing).

I ordered a large amount of back copies for some friends in America who cannot get them any other way. I ordered them on the 22/11/13 and paid for next day delivery.

Eaglemoss have again made an attempt to fix the issue, one parcel arrived with some of the missing issues. After another exchange of messages I was told I would received the rest of the issues when they are back in stock.

A few days later another parcel arrived with a few more copies.

(That was months ago now)

A few more issues have arrived but I need to check and see if that is all of the ones I’m owed ( I don’t think it is but I could be wrong)

Disney Cakes and Sweets Issue 31 Lunchbox / Bento Guide

Issue 31 came with a plastic Aladdin mould with Aladdin, Genie, Jasmine and the Magic Lamp.
I’m unsure why this mould is plastic when the resy have been silicone, I can only hope they go back to silicone as this mould is not as versatile as silicone, nor is it as detailed.

While you may be able to use this mould in a similar way to the silicone one’s for chocolate making, I’m unsure how well it would hold up in the freezer so I can’t advise trying it for frozen yoghurt etc.
This mould has very little detail and it will be a lot harder to get the finished product out. I really hope they revert back to silicone!!

What recipes are included:
• Aladdin’s magic carpet cake
• Scar’s chocolate filo dippers
• Cinderella’s cute cake pops
• Buzz Lightyear’s star swirl cookies
• Duchess’ very berry cheesecake
• Goofy’s honey and pine nut toffee
• Winnie the Pooh cake part 1
• Making filled chocolates
• Filo pastry recipes

Kuhn Rikon Stackable Storage Jars Review

I was recently sent some great looking Kuhn Rikon storage jars to review.

kuhn rikon stackable storage jars

Look how cool they are!!!

Anyway, without further ado, onto the review!!

Cost: 4/5
The two larger jars are £7.95 each and the smaller are £4.95.
At first I thought this was a little pricey but after some research on the market, that seems to be the general prices for similar jars. At least with these you get some extra features like stack-ability and style.

Size: 5/5

With four different sizes to choose from you won’t be left disappointed.

You won’t really need a jar smaller than the smallest nor one much bigger than the biggest.

Ease Of Use: 4/5

What can be easier than a twist top? But this twist top is not like those jam jars that are nigh impossible to undo. It is extremely easy to open and just as easy to close the lid.

Style: 5/5

I love the look of the Kuhn Rikon jars, nothing better than actual glass jars so you don’t get the taste of plastic on your food and there is something so modern looking about the mix of glass and bright coloured lids.

My only moan is that I wish each size came in each of the colours, the mix of all four colours may work in some kitchens but it would be nice to have the option to have all of the sizes in one uniform colour.

Pros:

  • They look amazing and they stack, perfect for smaller kitchens!
  • Very sturdy. No thin, brittle glass here. (Please don’t take that as they are indestructible.)
  • Very versatile.
  • The jars can fit in each other for easy storage.

Cons:

  • Not watertight (I presume that means not airtight? please let me know if I’m wrong!)
  • Lack of colour co-ordination.

How I tested and used the product:

To keep cut fruit:

Sadly the fruit did brown a little, this was about 4 hours later.

To make tsukemono:

To store Tea, Sugar, Coffee and Cocoa:

As a serving bowl:

20140409-205227.jpg

Yep, that’s right I used the largest jar to serve some ramen.

It contained:

  • Ramen
  • Boiled egg
  • Mushroom
  • Carrot and
  • Donner meat

It was delicious!

So overall I Love these Kuhn Rikon jars, it’s a shame they’re not watertight (airtight?) but that only means you can’t fill them with soup and carry it around with you, which I think the likelihood of anyone actually wanting to is pretty slim.

Like the previous moulds it can be used with anything that can be poured and frozen, like frozen sauces or yoghurt. You can also pour melted cheese in and allow to set. How cool would a dinosaur themed bento be with little cheese bones!
